From BHBE Leadership
This past week the new BHBE Sisterhood Executive Board and General Board were installed during our regular board meeting. The new officers will serve a two year term from 2020 - 2022. They are as follows:
The Sisterhood welcomes our new officers and looks forward to their renewed energy in their new positions. The executive board meets once a month in addition to our General Board which meets on the first Wednesday of every month. The General Board of Directors is composed of committee chairmen and past presidents of BHBE Sisterhood.
During these months while we could not meet together physically, we have held many online programming events. A new program which offers women a chance to get together online is called Kum aun Zoom. Participants have the opportunity to meet twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. Some SIGs (special interest groups) have been meeting online on a regular basis. We look forward to when we can all meet again in person.
BHBE Volunteer Crew Update
Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the BHBE Volunteer Crew, we have assisted numerous congregants with shopping and other assistance. As a reminder, if you are in need of support, please email Karen Thirman at kthirman@gmail.com or contact the BHBE office at 847-256-1213 and leave a message. We will coordinate your needs with our list of amazing volunteers.
Connecting at BHBE!
We want to share your pictures and videos!
In an effort to enhance our sense of community during this period of COVID-19, we are putting together a montage of photos and videos. We are looking for photos of your family sheltering in place and/or videos of your family talking about BHBE (what you miss about BHBE and what you look forward to in the future). If you are interested in joining this project, forward your photo or video clip to: connecting@bhbe.org. Our plan is to share this in late June, around the time of our Gala.
Graduations!
Do you have someone in your family graduating this year? From graduate school, College, High School, Middle School, Elementary School or pre-school? If so, we want to hear all about it! Please email us!
Leave a Legacy
LEAVE A LEGACY
Many of you are dedicated and long-standing members, volunteers and office holders who have contributed to the success of our congregation. It is in this spirit that we ask your consideration in helping make sure BHBE is thriving and relevant for the generations that follow.
In one way or another, our lives are rooted in Jewish experiences connecting us to the Jewish community. We already support Jewish charitable and community organizations in Chicago and elsewhere, but have we included these organizations in our will or Estate Plan. By leaving a Legacy, we can ensure that the traditions and institutions that mean so much to us today will be there for future generations.
We understand that everyone has a unique family and financial situation. Your legacy commitment can be designed to match your personal circumstances.
You can create a Jewish Legacy for BHBE in any of the following ways: 1. Make a gift through a bequest in a will, trust or estate plan. 2. Add (or change) a beneficiary designation on an IRA, pension fund, or life insurance policy. Your legacy commitment can be expressed as a specific dollar amount or as a percentage. 3. Give an outright cash gift to the endowment. 4. Increase your current income while making a gift through a Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust.
More than ever now, BHBE needs to send a clear and credible message that it is well prepared to continue as a strong, viable community for future generations. Your support will help make that a reality.
To start the process, please review the accompanying Declaration of Intent.
This Past Week In Israeli History June 7, 1981 - Iraq's Osirak Nuclear Reactor Destroyed By Israel
Eight Israeli F-16s fly a 2,000-mile round trip to bomb Iraq’s Osirak plutonium nuclear reactor at the Tammuz I complex 10 miles south of Baghdad. The mission, Operation Opera, succeeds at destroying the nearly completed, French-built reactor, which Israel fears would have been used to develop nuclear weapons. Ten Iraqi soldiers and one French civilian are killed in the attack. Prime Minister Menachem Begin’s approval of the operation establishes the Begin Doctrine: Israel will do whatever is necessary to prevent a hostile Middle Eastern regime from obtaining nuclear arms. The same doctrine is applied in 2007 when Israeli warplanes destroy a Syrian nuclear reactor in Operation Orchard, and the doctrine is behind Israel’s threats to use military action against Iran’s nuclear program.
Although French authorities and some experts refute that Iraq could have developed weapons with the Osiris-class reactor, which it purchased in 1976 and which Israel learned about in 1977, Israeli intelligence concludes that Osirak could produce atomic bombs of the size used against Hiroshima within five years of becoming operational. The F-16s used in the attack were supposed to be sold to Iran, but the deal was canceled after Iran’s Islamic revolution in early 1979, enabling Israel to purchase the aircraft instead. Iran failed in its own attempt to destroy the reactor in 1980 during its eight-year war against Iraq. Operation Opera pushes the F-16 fighter-bombers to the limit of their range. The fuel tanks are topped off on the runway immediately before takeoff, and pilots maintain a low speed on the way to the nuclear site to conserve fuel. Much of the logistical planning is done by Ilan Ramon, who flies the last plane in the formation more than two decades before he becomes Israel’s first astronaut aboard the doomed Columbia space shuttle in 2003.
Begin describes the mission as “literally a lifesaving operation,” and it wins praise from his immediate predecessor as prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin. Labor Party leader Shimon Peres, however, disapproves of the operation, which is condemned by the United States, France and the United Nations. From Israel 21C by Chuck "Zvi" Tannenbaum
