Zoom Gala Gala
Zum Gali Gali is an Israeli pioneer song originating around 1948. How fitting for our congregation, adapting to life with the corona virus. No way will we be defeated. Just as the pioneers pulled together then, we are pioneering a new way to come together and support BHBE. On Sunday June 28th we will share a joyful evening full of music, song, good humor, even dancing. Sisterhood, Men’s Club and the Academy are all joining forces on this event. Please support the Tribute book, the BHBE Galarama raffle, and consider being a sponsor. Save the date! Specifics about the event will be forthcoming.
A Word from Our Leadership
In addition to our regular meetings, Sisterhood offers a new programming idea. We are holding twice weekly virtual KUM AUN ZOOM (Come and Zoom). The meet ups are held on Mondays at 3:30pm and Thursdays at 10:30am. Each session has a topic to get the conversation started and a hostess to get the ball rolling. BYO drinks and snacks. Last week we started with “What Have You Been Watching?” where we shared TV series and movie ideas and on Thursday we had “Travel Conversations”. This week on Monday we are discussing “What’s Cooking? Meal Ideas to Share” followed on Thursday with “Conundrum” conversation starters to get you thinking. We would love to have you join us for an hour of brisk conversation. Please let me know if you would like to host or if you have an idea for a topic.
Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the BHBE Volunteer Crew, we have assisted numerous congregants with shopping and other assistance. As a reminder, if you are in need of support, please email Karen Thirman at kthirman@gmail.com or contact the BHBE office at 847-256-1213 and leave a message. We will coordinate your needs with our list of amazing volunteers.
Connecting at BHBE!
We want to share your pictures and videos!
In an effort to enhance our sense of communinty during this period of COVID-19, we are putting together a montage of photos and videos. We are looking for photos of your family sheltering in place and/or videos of your family talking about BHBE (what you miss about BHBE and what you look forward to in the future). If you are interested in joining this project, forward your photo or video clip to: connecting@bhbe.org. Our plan is to share this in late June, around the time of our Gala.
Leave a Legacy
How do we thank our BHBE first responders? The professional staff who tirelessly attend to all our spiritual, lifecycle, learning and informational needs. The BHBE lay leaders whose initiative guides us through this challenging period. The volunteers who seek out and administer to congregants in need. The authors of those daily emails and calls making sure we stay connected.
Leave a Legacy - That’s how No banging of pots and pans is necessary. Instead, show BHBE that you want to make sure it will continue to remain strong now and in the future.
We can make a difference - What will be our Legacy?
A Pump Storage Hydroelectric power plant (PSH) built by 2 Israeli companies on mount Gilboa (remember the David and Goliath story). This power plant was built at a cost of 2.2 Billion Israeli Shekel ($630 million dollars). The power plant will generate 300 Megawatts. The governmental agency which regulates the power production in Israel just gave the go ahead to the IPP (Independent Power Producer) to supply power to the Grid. The Israel Electric workers union, the most powerful union in Israel, objected to allowing the IPP to supply power to the grid. The station will be operating by General Electric. The Israel electric grid is 15,000 Megawatts, 98% of which is supplied by Israel Electric.
The pump storage power plant is generated by water flow. Two reservoir pools were constructed, one at the top of mount Gilboa the other at the bottom. The cost of electricity is high during the day, when the demand is high and is much lower at night. Water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the top reservoir at night using low cost electricity. During the daytime when the electric demand is high, water is flowing from the top reservoir down, turning a turbine which generates electricity sold at high cost.
As a consultant to Israel Electric, over 20 years ago, I was involved with my employer, Sargent and Lundy, together with another Chicago engineering company, Harza, in the preliminary study for a Pump Storage Hydroelectric power plant (PSH) at the Dead Sea. That project was never authorized. America currently has 43 PSH plants.

Buy Israeli Goods
NOW, More Than Ever, We Need To GO BIG (Buy Israeli Goods)
It is hard to know which way to turn our efforts at Tikkun Olam these days as we try and weather the Covid-19 storm. So many local, national and global crises loom and need our help and support.
As you consider where to direct your attention and financial support, please remember to include Israeli small businesses and artisans who are also reeling from the Covid-19 battle there.
It may not yet be possible to easily order imported goods, such as art, fabrics, books or Judaica but, G-d willing, that time will come again very soon. We hope to keep our congregation informed of available opportunities as the international marketplace reopens for business.
In the meantime, there are many Israeli foods available locally which we can enjoy and at the same time show our support for those brands and their employees.
Find out what safe-shopping practices your favorite stores have adopted and look for the Israeli brands you have always enjoyed: Elite, Osem, Wissotzky, Galil, Achvah and Telma are just a few. Stock up - on chocolates and Bamba and more – while you shelter at home or at any time.
Stay Safe and Well and looking forward to seeing everyone soon – in person!
